Taiwan Bulbul (Formosan Styan's Bulbul)
Taiwan Bulbul
By Syu, Wei Bin
Pycnonotus taivanus
Length: 19 cm

Distributed on the east coast from Hualien to the Hengchun Peninsula, Taiwan Bullbul resembles Formosan Chinese Bulbul in many ways, but its body is bigger than Formosan Chinese Bulbul. Hybrid descendant of the two birds had been found in Fonggang and Hualien area. Both parents’ features in plumage and shape can be seen in the hybrid descendant. Taiwan Bulbul likes to nest on the Indiapoon beautyleaf in Kenting and the breeding season is from late March to early July. Male and female will cooperate during the breeding season. Females will prepare the nest and hatch eggs, while males protect their territory. The bird usually breeds twice in a breeding season, laying 3-4 eggs in every nest. The hatching period is about 11-12days, with 60.4% of hatchability. Juveniles can usually leave the nest with 9 to 10 days.
