White-eared Sibia (Taiwan Sibia)
White-eared Sibia
By Syu, Wei Bin
Heterophasia auricularis
Length: 22-23 cm

Found in mountain areas 2,100 to 2,500m in elevation, such as Songcyuangang (2,490m) and Sinrengang (2,500m), White-eared Sibia tends to move to lower mountain slopes to winter. A common resident in Taiwan, it usually inhabits in broadleaf forests, mixed broadleaf/coniferous forests and dense bushes. Flocks of White-eared Sibia are very active in the understory of the forest. It eats insects, berries, fruits and nectar of cherry blossom for food. With distinctive twitter, it is considered the best singer among all babblers (Timallidae) in Taiwan.
