Engraving on the Stone Tablet
One hundred and ten years ago, the court of Ching decided to build the first traverse highway on Taiwan that runs east-west to enhance communication, cultural exchange and military defense of Taiwan. The epochal construction was completed after overcoming all kinds of difficulties and challenges. Wu Guang-liang, the governor of Taiwan who was appointed to supervise the construction, hoped that the highway could improve future transportation and cultural exchanges in Taiwan, so he engraved four words “Wan Nian Heng Cyu” (meaning “a thoroughfare for ten thousand years” on a gigantic stone tablet close to today’s Fonghuanggu Bird Park.
